With AWS, Uruguay Deploys Vaccination Appointment System in Record Time

Agesic, Uruguay’s Agency for the Electronic Government and the Information and Knowledge Society, needed a rapidly scalable vaccination appointment system to handle thousands of simultaneous users and avoid overloads in the national COVID-19 campaign. GeneXus, working with other providers and using Amazon Web Services (serverless components such as Amazon S3, API Gateway, AWS Lambda and DynamoDB), was engaged to design a compliant, fast-to-deploy solution.

GeneXus built an AWS-based asynchronous “protective” layer and serverless architecture that was deployed in two days, preventing the legacy system from overloading while ensuring data encryption and regulatory compliance. The implementation handled peak demand and recorded requests from 800,000 people without difficulty; by April 2021 about 2 million of 2.8 million eligible Uruguayans had scheduled appointments, giving Agesic and the government real-time visibility into vaccine demand and a cost‑effective, scalable platform.
