Case Study: Gerdau achieves digital transformation and smarter steel recycling with GeneXus

Sustainable transformation of an intelligent enterprise

Gerdau, a 110‑year‑old leader in long steels and the largest recycling company in Latin America, needed to modernize and standardize complex, high‑volume processes—from scrap classification and consignment sales to customer ordering and finance—while integrating tightly with its SAP ERP. To meet this challenge it selected GeneXus, using GeneXus for SAP Systems (with partner Simplifica) to drive its digital transformation.

GeneXus built two integrated solutions: a consignment management system (frontend for consignees and backend for Gerdau) and the e‑Gerdau ecommerce platform, both connected to SAP via the GeneXus ERP Connector and using Ignia Framework/SAP Fiori styling. The systems (live in Argentina and Uruguay, with further rollouts underway) automate SAP purchase orders, give customers real‑time visibility into orders and outstanding invoices, streamline deliveries and payments, and replace legacy tooling—supporting Gerdau’s high‑volume operations (about 14 million tons/year in Brazil, with ~80% recyclable steel). GeneXus is also co‑innovating on an AI scrap‑analysis project with SAP Leonardo to automate qualitative classification and further reduce subjectivity.
