How the largest university in the Netherlands keeps over 30,000 students safe

Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands with about 30,000 students and dozens of buildings, faced inefficient, standalone analog camera systems that forced security officers to physically review recorders after incidents. Working with integrator Chubb Fire and Security, the university selected Genetec’s Security Center with Omnicast to consolidate video systems and centralize monitoring from a new control room.

Genetec implemented an IP video platform (Security Center Omnicast) integrated with intrusion detection, now serving over 300 cameras (up from 10) and roughly 40 client stations with redundant archivers. The result: faster incident response and investigations from the control room, automatic video pop-up on alarms, maximized staff resources, reduced operational costs, and a measurable expansion of coverage—improving campus safety and the perceived security of students and staff.
