Enhancing Campus Life With IP Access Control

The University of Hull faced an aging mag‑stripe access control system across more than 30 buildings on two campuses, with parts becoming difficult and expensive to source and a need to balance openness with secure, phased expansion. Having already migrated to IP video with Genetec Omnicast, the university selected Genetec’s Security Center platform with Synergis to modernize access control and enable an open, scalable solution.

Genetec deployed Security Center with Synergis IP access control and Synergis Cloud Link to upgrade 317 doors, integrate 225 cameras, and centrally manage access for over 50,000 cardholders, while supporting HID MIFARE DESFire EV1 and HID Mobile Access. The implementation avoided extensive new cabling, automated enrollment for roughly 8,000 students per semester via a Genetec SDK integration, improved visitor management and departmental collaboration, and produced clear time and cost savings while enabling further expansion (another 70 doors and 30 cameras planned).
