City of Aspen, Colorado installs Genetec’s AutoVu IP License Plate Recognition System to monitor parking

The City of Aspen faced chronic parking congestion as tourists and commuters overflowed residential zones, defeating time-limit rules with frequent re-parking. To modernize enforcement, the City of Aspen installed Genetec’s AutoVu IP License Plate Recognition (LPR) system to replace chalking and paper-based methods and provide a system-wide vehicle tracking database.

Genetec’s AutoVu, integrated with Aspen’s Verrus pay-by-phone and T2 Systems permit/ticketing platforms, used vehicle-mounted LPR cameras and a central database to automate zone scans and alert officers to violations. The Genetec solution produced a 900% increase in coverage, cut enforcement staff needs (residential team down to two officers), raised patrols to 2–4 passes per space per day, reduced sweep times from about an hour to five minutes, drove scofflaws nearly to zero and halved bootable cars, while also improving reporting and aiding law enforcement.
