A Genetec Case Study
Brigham Young University (BYU) needed a more efficient, secure way to manage parking across a 560-acre campus with 60 lots, roughly 17,000 spaces and 65,000 registered vehicles each semester. The university’s sticker-based permitting and failing RFID gate cards were costly and administratively heavy, so BYU evaluated LPR systems and selected Genetec’s AutoVu (within the Security Center platform) to centralize permit management and improve enforcement without being intrusive.
Genetec deployed AutoVu as a mix of fixed and mobile LPR solutions — an initial four-camera rollout now expanded to five AutoVu-controlled gates, five fixed Sharp cameras and two patrol vehicles — integrated with BYU’s persons database and the CiteWrite ticketing system. The implementation eliminated physical stickers and most RFID replacements, enabled online permitting and shared permits, scans nearly 60 lots multiple times per day, sped up patrols, broadened enforcement coverage, aided criminal investigations via hotlists/NCIC alerts, and delivers citations to owners same-day, streamlining administration and improving campus security.
