A GE Healthcare Case Study
University of Washington Medical Center faced a radiology workflow challenge common to many modern hospitals: its clinicians had to work across multiple disconnected systems, including PACS, RIS, HIS, speech recognition, and advanced image processing tools. As imaging demands grew, moving between workstations and managing separate applications slowed interpretation, reduced efficiency, and made it harder to use advanced 3D analysis consistently. GE Healthcare’s AW Server and Dexus workflow were introduced to help address these integration and productivity issues.
GE Healthcare implemented AW Server integration with PACS and RIS to create a single imaging workflow on the same workstation, using a thin-client architecture and a central PACS database to provide seamless access to advanced 3D visualization and post-processing tools. The result was faster image post-processing, improved usability, transparent image sharing, and better remote access across UW Medicine’s multi-site network. The medical center also reported that 3D analysis could change or improve diagnosis in approximately 10% to 15% of high-tech imaging cases, while the new environment improved speed, collaboration, and overall diagnostic productivity.
