Driving Cost, Quality and Access Improvements with Technology and Process Optimization

HCA Healthcare, a large hospital network with more than 50 hospitals in its National Group, wanted to improve the quality, access, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of its ECG services while reducing turnaround time, length of stay, and manual paper-based work. Working with GE Healthcare, the organization moved toward a digital ECG environment using the MUSE cardiology information system, standardized ECG carts, and wireless connectivity.

GE Healthcare implemented MUSE with HIS interfaces, MobileLink wireless ECG communications, bedside monitor integration, and standardized workflows for ordering, transmitting, and reading ECGs. The results included measurable improvements such as roughly 85–90% of ECGs completed within 24 hours, reduced staff time and paper-processing costs, better patient data accuracy, improved serial comparison use, and significant savings including annual labor savings, lower storage and transcription costs, and even avoidance of new ECG cart purchases.
