NRG Achieves Optimal Balance Between Asset Life And Performance To Maximize Profitability

NRG Energy, a leading integrated power company with about 48,000 MW of generation capacity and nearly 3 million retail customers, faced the challenge of balancing maintenance of its GE units with the need to maximize power output for bulk power markets. To address this, GE Digital provided its Operations Optimization solution, leveraging a Digital Twin model and Advanced Controls software to give NRG visibility and insight for both short- and long-term operational decisions.

GE Digital implemented the Digital Twin and Advanced Controls at one NRG generating station (with broader rollout planned), enabling “banking” of MW hours during turndown and safe peak firing to capture higher market prices. GE Digital’s solution lets NRG plan optimal maintenance windows and monitor outage timelines; modeling shows a measurable 2–3% MW output improvement and the potential to deliver more than $5 million in additional profitability with zero impact to scheduled outages.
