Aircraft Component Manufacturer Uses Data Science To Predict Defects And Reduce Cost

Aircraft Component Manufacturer operated a complex, high-volume engine-component facility—millions of operations across more than 100,000 parts—but couldn’t extract cost-reduction insights from siloed defect, timestamp and material-cost data, leading to production losses and costly overruns. To address this, they engaged GE Digital's Data Science team to mine the underutilized data and identify opportunities to cut costs and predict failures.

GE Digital consolidated defect, timestamp and cost data, computed ideal part routes, generated heat maps to reveal process pain points, and built models that surface leading indicators of delinquencies, overruns and defects. The solution enabled the Aircraft Component Manufacturer to predict defects 2–3 months before occurrence, pinpoint root causes, and move to a more proactive, cost-effective manufacturing approach.
