Case Study: University of Alberta achieves world-class interdisciplinary research capabilities with GDI Ainsworth’s integrated laboratory controls and HVAC solutions

A GDI Ainsworth Case Study

University of Alberta delivers 85,000 ft² world-class research hub with GDI Ainsworth

The University of Alberta required a technically demanding infrastructure installation for its Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS). The challenge involved integrating complex laboratory controls and energy management systems within a challenging architectural footprint, all while meeting the high-performance needs of various specialty research spaces on a fast-tracked construction timeline. GDI Ainsworth was engaged to provide integrated laboratory controls and advanced HVAC systems.

GDI Ainsworth implemented a solution that included 750,000 CFM of air-handling equipment, 250 variable-volume fume hoods, and advanced energy strategies like process-load cooling and heat recovery. The result was Canada’s first facility of its kind, which achieved LEED Silver certification. This project strengthened the university's position as a global research leader and provided long-term operational sustainability through its innovative energy recovery strategies.
