Case Study: Burrard International Holdings achieves energy and carbon savings with GDI Ainsworth HVAC optimization

A GDI Ainsworth Case Study

Burrard International Holdings cuts energy use by 35,000 kWh a year with GDI Ainsworth

Burrard International Holdings faced significant energy inefficiency challenges at their Vancouver mixed-use tower. The building's HVAC and pumping systems were operating on outdated constant-volume controls, leading to excessive energy consumption, negative pressure issues, and high operating costs. They partnered with GDI Ainsworth to implement mechanical and HVAC optimizations that would also align with BC Hydro’s Power Smart Program.

GDI Ainsworth executed a solution that included retrofitting supply and return fans with VFDs, reconfiguring the chilled water system, and adding control valves for flow modulation. This eliminated system blending and allowed for optimized, variable-speed operation. The project delivered substantial results, including approximately $41,500 in annual energy cost savings, a reduction of 35,000 kWh in electricity consumption, and a lowering of greenhouse gas emissions by 80 tonnes of CO₂ annually. GDI Ainsworth achieved these outcomes with a simple payback period of 3.2 years.
