A GDevelop Case Study
Coding Pirates Lyngby, an after-school program in Denmark, sought a tool to teach children aged 9-15 the next steps in programming after they had learned the basics with Scratch. Their challenge was to find a platform that was accessible for young learners yet powerful enough to provide a genuine introduction to text-based coding logic. They implemented GDevelop, a free and open-source game development software, to serve as this critical educational stepping stone.
The solution from GDevelop provided a visual, event-based system that allowed students to learn programming logic by creating their own platform games. Over a five-week workshop, students successfully built functional games, with many gaining the confidence to troubleshoot issues and add complex features like health systems and scene transitions. The measurable impact was clear: the workshop was so successful that Coding Pirates Lyngby decided to run another one, with three students from the initial group continuing to develop their skills. GDevelop effectively bridged the gap between block-based and text-based programming for the students.
