Riga Technical University cuts genome processing from 650 minutes to under 30 with Gcore

Riga Technical University High-Performance Computing Center (RTU HPC) faced the challenge of accelerating AI-powered genomic research for its work with the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre. They needed to rapidly process thousands of human genomes but were constrained by the high computational demands of large datasets, difficulties in sourcing high-performance GPU hardware quickly, and the need for a cost-effective, scalable solution that maintained data sovereignty within the Baltic region. They turned to the vendor Gcore for its GPU Cloud service.

Gcore provided on-demand access to NVIDIA H100 GPUs on its European cloud infrastructure. This solution delivered a sovereign, scalable platform that eliminated long hardware procurement cycles. The results were significant, with genomic processing times reduced by up to 95%, making some tasks 50 times faster than with previous CPU-based systems. This allowed RTU HPC to achieve faster research outcomes in a flexible, cost-effective manner while ensuring all data remained compliant within its legal jurisdiction.
