AVEQ cuts live stream stalls with Gcore, boosting retransmission performance by 10x

AVEQ, a technology company based in Vienna, partnered with Gcore to address a critical challenge for a major national broadcaster: live video streams were experiencing frequent stalls and quality drops for viewers, despite the Gcore CDN's infrastructure metrics appearing healthy. This disconnect between Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) was causing viewer complaints and a declining Mean Opinion Score.

Gcore implemented a multi-layered solution by first rebalancing network capacity on a problematic ISP path, reducing TCP retransmissions tenfold. They then worked with AVEQ to refine measurement by ignoring sub-100ms micro-stalls and helped identify player bugs causing false positives. Finally, Gcore deployed its sub-second caching feature to resolve a manifest race condition, eliminating stalls without requiring changes from the broadcaster. As a result, stall events were reduced to meet the broadcaster's strict benchmark of fewer than five per 24 hours, significantly improving the viewer experience.
