West Midlands 5G - Customer Case Study

The customer, West Midlands 5G, a programme to develop a UK-wide 5G testbed, required detailed insights into network performance and 5G coverage in the Sandwell area to inform use case trials and accelerate regional deployment. They partnered with vendor Gaist, who utilized its network testing service in collaboration with RootMetrics, to gather precise, street-level data on connectivity.

The solution from Gaist involved conducting extensive drive testing, covering 434 kilometres and performing nearly 27,000 tests over 12 days. This provided an unprecedented density of data, revealing that EE had the most extensive 5G coverage (52.8%) while Vodafone offered the fastest 5G median download speed (184.4 Mbps). The insights enabled West Midlands 5G to accurately assess the feasibility of its testbed use cases and make informed decisions to guide the efficient expansion of 5G connectivity across the region.
