International Dark-Sky Association maps light pollution across 25 conservation areas with Fulcrum

The International Dark-Sky Association, a nonprofit focused on reducing light pollution, faced a challenge in collecting consistent field data. Hired by Florida agencies to assess coastal lighting threatening sea turtle hatchlings, their manual pen-and-paper process was prone to inconsistency and lacked integrated GPS, making analysis difficult. They turned to Fulcrum for a better data collection solution.

Using the Fulcrum app on iOS devices, the IDA team quickly captured geo-tagged field data with minimal training. Fulcrum enabled them to efficiently manage and export the information, which formed the basis for recommending lighting retrofits to protect the turtles. The organization plans to use Fulcrum again to document the improvements, with the project aimed at offsetting impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
