Case Study: Green Mountain College achieves streamlined, consistent geologic mapping with Fulcrum

A Fulcrum Case Study

Exploring and evaluating environmental issues in Vermont using geologic mapping

Green Mountain College used geologic mapping to study environmental issues across Vermont—everything from groundwater characterization and landslide susceptibility to storm impacts like Tropical Storm Irene. Their challenge was a fragmented, paper-heavy field workflow (maps, notebooks, cameras, handheld GPS) that made multi-user consistency, layer integration, and data backup time-consuming and error-prone.

By adopting Fulcrum on GPS-enabled tablets and phones, the team consolidated mapping, photos, required data fields, visibility rules, and offline layers (LiDAR, Mapbox imagery, shapefiles) into a single cloud-connected interface. The result was more consistent, merge-ready data across users, faster field delineation (e.g., surficial units in Monkton), safer in-field backups, and an accessible platform for student projects and classroom app-building.
