A FreshBooks Case Study
MedWish International, founded by Monica and Dr. Lee Ponsky in 1993, is a Cleveland-based nonprofit that repurposes surplus U.S. medical supplies for use in under-resourced countries. The primary challenge was scaling a garage-born idea into a sustainable, global operation—securing funding, building reliable hospital and international partnerships, coordinating complex logistics, and keeping volunteers, donors and stakeholders engaged.
MedWish addressed this by hiring experienced leadership, cultivating a broad network of 50+ hospitals, volunteers, an active board and international partners who arrange shipments, and by running effective fundraising like the annual Band Aid Bash. The result: MedWish has shipped 2.7 million pounds of supplies to 97 countries, raises over $230,000 annually from its benefit, and stretches every dollar—sending roughly $16 worth of supplies for each $1 donated.
