Johns Hopkins Biological Repository - Customer Case Study

The Johns Hopkins Biological Repository, a major academic biorepository at Johns Hopkins University, faced challenges of space constraints, high energy consumption from mechanical freezers, and the need for a more efficient, sustainable, and scalable sample management system. To address these issues, they partnered with the vendor Freezerworks to implement its sample management software to modernize their operations.

The solution implemented by Freezerworks provided a centralized database for tracking over a million samples with features like electronic transmittals, batch entry, and globally unique aliquot IDs (GUAID), which streamlined workflows from sample receipt to storage and distribution. This resulted in a 50% reduction in energy consumption for storage and an overall 3.3% reduction in energy use for the school by facilitating a move to more efficient cryogenic units, while also improving operational accuracy and supporting their “Greening the Lab” initiative.
