How Susquehanna Health Foundation has created a culture of legacy giving

Susquehanna Health Foundation, the philanthropic arm for UPMC hospitals in North Central Pennsylvania, faced a challenge with its passive approach to planned giving. Their small team's bandwidth was limited, and they relied on outside vendors for direct mail campaigns that failed to meet their needs or advance donor conversations. They sought a new solution to boost staff capacity and build an effective program, which they found with the vendor FreeWill.

The solution was to implement FreeWill's bequest tool, starting with an internal campaign for UPMC employees as a way to thank them. This initiative allowed the Foundation to engage in strategic, purpose-driven conversations about legacy planning. Through FreeWill, the Foundation raised over $110,000 in primary bequest commitments and over $1 million in contingent commitments within the first two years of the partnership, successfully launching their planned giving program.
