Preview of the China National Petroleum Company Case Study

Peruvian Energy Company Optimizes Communications Network with Secure and Reliable Wireless M2M Solutions

China National Petroleum Company (CNPC), the sixth-largest energy company globally, runs operations in Peru and needed a reliable wireless M2M link to bring remote pumping equipment data into its SCADA system. A pilot in coastal Piura faced challenging terrain—depressions, canyons and streams with no clear line-of-site—and competing solutions produced ambient noise and repeatedly failed to establish reliable links.

CNPC turned to FreeWave, which reconfigured antenna separation and deployed FGR09CSUs in slave/repeater mode; the devices were installed in about 30 minutes and seamlessly integrated with SCADA. FreeWave established links immediately, maintained uninterrupted data for the three-month pilot, and CNPC now operates several hundred units across oil collection sites, treatment plants, water ejection sites and compression stations, with engineers citing ease of installation, low cost and reliable non-LOS performance.
