A FreeWave Case Study
The Instituto Geofísico de Ecuador, responsible for national seismic and volcanic monitoring since 1983, needed an affordable, real-time telemetry system to improve early eruption warnings and protect communities. With a mission to reduce disaster impact through constant monitoring and technology, the Institute required reliable communications to support its seismograph and volcano observatory networks and to continue issuing life‑saving alerts during eruptions.
The Institute deployed FreeWave’s serial M2M radio solutions to transmit data from seismic stations, accelerometers, meteorological and gas sensors, GPS deformation stations, remote cameras and mud‑flow monitors. The solution proved highly reliable and low‑maintenance—even under extreme conditions, including image transmission from 5,947 m altitude—providing stable, cost‑effective real‑time data that strengthened early‑warning capabilities and supported ongoing monitoring projects across Ecuador.
