Sony CSL - Customer Case Study

Sony CSL, an independent research laboratory in Paris, studied the meaning, origin, and evolution of language. To support this work, the team needed a scalable way to model how language changes over time through interacting autonomous agents and complex simulations. They chose Franz Inc.’s Allegro CL and Allegro CLIM tools to help build and manage this research environment.

Using Franz Inc.’s Allegro CL and Allegro CLIM, Sony CSL created a distributed agent-based simulation with interactive controls, graphical sound visualization, and easy integration with a C library for acoustic signal processing. The solution let researchers modify simulations while they were running, speeding development and debugging, and it helped them realistically represent language interaction. Franz Inc. enabled Sony CSL to create the first robotic agents developed with a natural language system, supporting research into whether speech evolved culturally rather than genetically.
