Mathematical Systems Inc. needed a better way to help Honda analyze car crash test data and design safer cars. The challenge was managing an extremely large database—over one terabyte—containing not just numbers, but also photos and movies, all for engineers, designers, and test drivers with limited systems knowledge. Franz Inc. provided the core technology, including Allegro CL, AllegroStore, and Allegro ORBLink, to support the application.

Franz Inc. helped Mathematical Systems build a flexible intranet-based Honda Car Test Database System that let users browse mixed media data through a Java applet interface. The solution allowed schema changes without stopping the server and could be ported from Sun/Solaris to Windows/NT without code changes. Benchmark results showed the Franz Inc. stack outperformed Oracle/SQL and JDBC in nearly every test, with far less storage overhead—about 200 GB versus 1 TB—and fewer lines of code for storage and retrieval tasks.
