BT Labs, part of British Telecom Labs, needed a faster way to design, price, and configure complex internetworks as demand for new network services grew. Using Franz Inc.’s Allegro CL, BT Labs built SPEED (Solutions Pricing and End to End Design), a suite to help its sales and engineering teams handle network design more efficiently.

Franz Inc. provided the Common Lisp development environment used to create SPEED’s two tools: Designer, a model-based expert system for “what-if” pricing and network analysis, and Configurator, a graphical rule-based system for recommending router configurations and components. The solution was rolled out to more than 100 salespeople on laptop PCs, cutting a process that previously took weeks down to on-the-spot pricing and delivering about an order-of-magnitude productivity improvement over traditional C++ development.
