A Foxit Software Case Study
Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), a major German health insurer, processes up to 6,000 customer “bonus booklets” daily, where insured members record health activities to earn cash rewards. The booklets must be scanned in color to preserve stamps and handwriting for OCR, producing very large TIFF files (around 50 MB each) that were costly to store and slow to transmit. TK needed an archiving and compression solution that preserved image quality and integrated with its existing PDF/A workflow and automated processing.
TK implemented Foxit PDF Compressor Enterprise, whose MRC-based compression produces ISO-compliant PDF/A files with near-original readability while reducing color scans from ~50 MB to roughly 50 KB. The compressor runs as a background Windows service, automatically converting incoming TIFFs and handing compressed PDFs to TK’s TKeasy system for downstream processing, cutting storage and bandwidth needs, preventing network overload, and streamlining archival. TK also planned to add digital signatures to allow secure destruction of paper originals and further optimize retention.
