District Savings Bank Ludwigsburg Archives in Color with PDF/A

District Savings Bank Ludwigsburg, Germany’s second-largest district savings bank with a balance sheet over €9 billion and nearly 770,000 customer accounts, faced rapidly growing paper archives—credit files alone average about 200 sheets each and include color documents, odd sizes and margin notes that needed to be retained. The volume created huge storage, access and cost challenges, so the bank decided to digitize legacy files and capture new ones electronically.

They engaged scanning partner Condecco and selected PDF/A (after a 10-file test) to preserve color and shrink file size, then standardized on Foxit PDF Compressor and Bechtle’s capture solution integrated with the OSPlus archive. The result: highly compressed color PDF/A files often using only ~70% of TIFF storage, lower archiving costs under Finanz Informatik’s billing, easier access and plans to add OCR full-text retrieval—employees now consider color PDF/A indispensable.
