A Foxit Software Case Study
DAK‑Gesundheit, one of Germany’s largest health insurers with more than six million members, digitizes the majority of its incoming mail across three DigiCentres, processing about 90,000 items daily (roughly one ton). The centres needed to fully classify, index and route a high volume of mixed documents while meeting legal and long‑term‑archiving requirements; in 2012 they chose color scanning and PDF/A conversion for better readability and compliance but worried color files would blow up storage and network capacity.
Foxit’s PDF/A conversion and award‑winning compression were integrated into the scanning workflow to immediately compress images, apply qualified electronic signatures, extract metadata to XML and store documents in the DMS. The result: color scans only slightly larger than previous black‑and‑white files, eliminating the need for extra storage or bandwidth, maintaining reliable OCR/ICR data extraction, improving legal certainty and enabling plans to convert incoming emails and online submissions to PDF/A.
