A Foxglove Case Study
The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM JHC) at the University of New Hampshire operates marine robotic vessels for ocean exploration. Their challenge was a lack of robust observability tools, which forced researchers to spend weeks manually converting and parsing immense amounts of proprietary and ROS data across multiple systems. This arduous process made it difficult to troubleshoot issues in real-time, analyze mission logs, and empower their entire multidisciplinary team to access and understand the data.
By adopting the Foxglove observability platform, CCOM JHC gained an integrated environment to visualize and analyze their multimodal data seamlessly. Foxglove provided real-time monitoring for teleoperation and intuitive post-mission data playback, complete with custom layouts for different workflows. This solution reduced data discovery time from weeks to hours, a 10x improvement, and enabled all team members, regardless of technical skill, to inspect logs and accelerate development.
