Sony Pictures Imageworks creates over 25 custom tools with Foundry for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Sony Pictures Imageworks faced the challenge of creating the unique, comic book-inspired graphic look for the animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," which required a complete reconfiguration of their traditional VFX pipeline. To achieve this, they partnered with Foundry and heavily utilized its Nuke compositing software to develop a new, extensive toolset.
Foundry's solution involved the creation of over 25 custom tools and templates within Nuke, empowering artists to handcraft the film's signature halftone dots, hatch lines, and other graphic effects directly in comp. This approach resulted in the film being the most comp-heavy project Sony Pictures Imageworks had ever done, ultimately enabling them to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and deliver a one-of-a-kind visual masterpiece.
