Foundry's customer, MPC (a major visual effects company), faced the challenge of managing increasingly complex and technically demanding film projects. Their pipeline required a more flexible and powerful tool to handle vast datasets and streamline the lighting and look development process for photorealistic rendering, which was critical for ambitious films like "Life of Pi" and "Detective Pikachu."

Foundry implemented its Katana software as MPC's main lighting and look development tool. The solution introduced full proceduralism and powerful scene graph handling, which drastically reduced setup complexity and gave artists a more interactive, creative experience. This transition, done in collaboration with Pixar's RenderMan, resulted in a significant jump in photorealism and enabled MPC's teams to efficiently achieve the high-quality visuals required for their award-winning projects.
