Preview of the Folks Case Study

Folks creates 115 shots of invisible VFX with Foundry

Folks, a visual effects studio, faced the challenge of creating realistic and extensive hockey crowd scenes and arena set extensions for the series Heated Rivalry on a compressed schedule. Using Foundry's NukeX and its Particle System, the team needed to efficiently populate stadiums and match various lighting conditions across 115 shots to support the show's storytelling.

The solution implemented by Foundry's tools allowed Folks to automate crowd population using particles and sprites, giving artists full control within the compositing environment for fast iterations. This approach enabled a small team of artists to create photorealistic, invisible VFX that were crucial to key emotional scenes. The result was a highly successful visual effect that went unnoticed by the show's dedicated fanbase, contributing to the series' widespread praise for its representation and storytelling.
