DNEG uses Foundry Mari to texture 29-shot Seattle finale with 200+ buildings

DNEG, a visual effects company, faced the challenge of texturing a complex post-apocalyptic coastal city for the second season of HBO's *The Last of Us*. Their work required creating realistic decay, grunge, and damage across a wide range of assets, from hero buildings to background structures, to reflect the show's dystopian setting. They utilized Foundry's Mari software to accomplish this extensive texturing work.

Using Foundry's Mari, DNEG implemented procedural workflows to efficiently texture a large number of background buildings, storing and reusing materials across multiple assets. The team used Mari to generate essential maps for applying grime and moss, hand-painted detailed textures on key buildings, and optimized assets to render complex scenes efficiently, such as a finale with over 200 buildings. This use of Mari allowed DNEG to create photorealistic, decayed surfaces that effectively supported the storytelling and vision of the VFX supervisors and directors.
