Orcas Island Community Foundation - Customer Case Study

Orcas Island Community Foundation (OICF), a small community foundation in the San Juan Islands with three employees, needed to build its endowment, improve investment results and reduce fees, and get timely, accurate fund balances while tracking donations, calculating distributions, and managing funds. In 2012 they engaged Foundant Technologies and adopted the CommunitySuite platform to replace multiple systems and bring investment management in-house.

Foundant Technologies’ CommunitySuite—using the Grant Catalog, Fund Accounting, Donor Reports, Fund Manager, Events, and online support tools—streamlined OICF’s operations and enabled two annual online crowdfunded grant programs. As a result, grantmaking grew from $300,000 to over $1.8 million in four years (OICF awarded $1.8M in 2015), contributions reached $8.3M in 2016, donors tripled with nearly 10% local participation, and the foundation achieved this growth while maintaining the same staff size.
