Securing New England Federal Credit Union’s members PII

New England Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) is a member-owned financial institution serving over 88,000 members with $1 billion in assets and is the largest credit union in Vermont. Although NEFCU had strong security practices—USB blocking, network access controls, encryption and employee training—it lacked enterprise-wide visibility and granularity into what sensitive member data was being shared with vendors and partners, and could not determine exactly what data was leaving the organization.

NEFCU deployed Fortra’s Digital Guardian Network DLP, initially monitoring network traffic for three months to identify data-use patterns and then building precise, low‑false‑positive policies. The solution installed in hours with minimal maintenance, provided granular visibility into web and network traffic, enabled vendor whitelisting and differentiated controls, and automatically blocked, encrypted or rerouted sensitive data—improving compliance and confidence without impacting productivity.
