Interactive Data Uses Vityl Capacity Management to Stay One Step Ahead of Performance Constraints

Interactive Data Pricing and Reference Data, a division of Interactive Data Corp., provides global securities pricing, evaluations and reference data to banks, brokerages, funds and other financial institutions. To support millions of instruments and a broad, distributed client base it runs a large fleet of UNIX/Linux servers; however, basic tools like vmstat and top left the team reactive and unable to monitor or plan capacity effectively as server sprawl and traffic peaks grew.

After evaluating several products, Interactive Data deployed Vityl Capacity Management across its production environment to proactively monitor performance, generate automated daily and weekly reports, and model future capacity (including disaster-recovery failover). The tool’s drilldown and workload analysis let the team pinpoint bottlenecks in minutes (for example identifying a userid spawning thousands of processes), ensure DR systems could handle peak loads, and keep managers informed of cyclical trends—resulting in faster problem resolution and better capacity planning.
