IBM i Virus Protection Adds an Essential Service to City of Columbia

The City of Columbia, Missouri, manages utility billing and many municipal services for about 100,000 residents on an IBM Power Systems 520 (System i) supporting roughly 600 users. With drive mappings to PC-based Novell/Windows/AIX servers and Internet connectivity, IT Supervisor John Johnson discovered virus files appearing on the System i’s IFS, exposing the city’s systems and data to potential infections and reinfections of user PCs.

Columbia deployed Bytware’s StandGuard Anti-Virus (System i-based, McAfee engine), scheduling weekly scans with automated signature updates and minimal hands-on administration. The solution was easy to install, well supported by Bytware, removed stored virus files and eliminated reinfection risk, giving administrators reliable, low-effort protection and greater confidence in the integrity of city systems.
