A Fortra Case Study
A Global 100 engineering and electronics conglomerate with thousands of scientists and engineers and over $30 billion in proprietary IP suffered a costly IP loss and lacked the tools to stop or investigate the breach. Their design process used multiple commercial and proprietary applications with a custom repository, multilingual content, and many users who needed different privileges—making accurate classification, secure sharing, and controlled transfers to partners difficult to enforce.
Fortra’s Digital Guardian provided discovery and context-and-content classification (including support for 90+ languages) and a classification API for proprietary systems, plus policy “Prompt” workflows that require and record user justification before risky actions. The solution blocked unauthorized devices, automatically encrypted exported files, enforced decryption only on managed endpoints, and produced forensic-quality event logs—resulting in accurate classification across systems, improved sharing without IP loss, full visibility into user activity, and recorded, encrypted transfers when required.
