Field-level Encryption Helps Retail Chain Achieve PCI Compliance

Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores, a retail travel-stop chain with more than 210 locations in 34 states, processes roughly 200,000 credit card transactions per day. Needing to meet PCI standards while still allowing access to card data for dispute resolution, Love’s required a seamless, high-volume field-level encryption solution that could be implemented without disrupting operations.

They deployed Powertech Encryption for IBM i on a segregated server, using triggers and HelpSystems’ APIs with custom program wrappers to automatically encrypt card numbers on entry and enable controlled decryption. The solution was easy to implement with strong documentation and support, now securing ~200,000 daily transactions, simplifying compliance reporting, running automatically, and enabling Love’s to achieve PCI compliance.
