A Fortra Case Study
QinetiQ Australia, a leading independent provider of technical advice to the Defence, Aerospace, Security and Resources sectors, faced the challenge of handling ITAR‑protected information under project‑specific U.S. exemptions that prohibit disclosure to non‑US or non‑exempt individuals. Concerned about the severe fines and lengthy remedial orders that follow ITAR breaches—and noting that staff were less familiar with unclassified ITAR marking and handling—QinetiQ wanted to tighten procedures and raise user awareness to prevent inadvertent non‑compliance.
The security team deployed Boldon James Email Classifier and Office Classifier to require users to label documents and emails as “ITAR Controlled” or “Not ITAR Controlled,” making labelling mandatory on send. The solution automatically compares email and attachment labels and blocks messages where an attachment’s sensitivity exceeds the email’s label, increasing day‑to‑day awareness, reducing the risk of accidental disclosure, and strengthening the company’s ability to protect customer confidentiality, with plans to extend labelling to further licensing controls.
