Automated Monitoring Keeps One New Mexico City on Track

The City of Farmington, New Mexico, is the commercial hub of the Four Corners region—a community of about 50,000 that can swell to 250,000 on weekends and holidays. Information Services Administrator Rick Weinstein oversees a pared-down IT team (shrunk from six to two) and a single IBM iSeries that handles critical functions—financial transactions, police and public safety records, 911 backup for Aztec, and billing for 44,000 utility customers used by over 700 users—so efficient, reliable monitoring is essential.

Farmington deployed Bytware’s MessengerPlus (installed on the iSeries in 1998) to automatically monitor systems and page Weinstein at the first sign of trouble. MessengerPlus detected issues such as a runaway job filling a disk drive and a failed backup, allowing remote fixes (even at 2:00 a.m.), preventing outages and system reboots for six years, and making a two-person staff far more effective—backed by responsive Bytware support.
