Wireless Networking Supports a Contemporary Education With a Strong Academic Focus

Melbourne Girls Grammar School, a century‑old Anglican boarding and day school in Melbourne, relies heavily on technology — every student from year five receives a laptop — but its legacy wireless network left two‑thirds of students without access, caused disconnections when moving between classes, delayed lessons and limited video and VoIP use.

The school piloted and then deployed a Fortinet Wireless LAN (main and backup controllers and 60 APs) across classrooms and public spaces to support about 1,200 student laptops. The single‑channel architecture, airtime fairness and zero‑handoff design delivered uninterrupted connections, reliable VoIP, simultaneous access in dense areas (library, science/tech), fewer APs and simpler management — all implemented on time and on budget.
