West Virginian County Commission Helps Keep Local Public Service IT Systems Up and Running with Fortinet

The Berkeley County Commission in Martinsburg, West Virginia, which provides IT services to county departments and critical public agencies, faced growing demands as the county rapidly expanded. With legacy firewalls that were hard to manage, the IT team—led by Gary Wine—needed a more intuitive, resilient security platform to ensure continuous network availability for services like 911, emergency responders, and county operations.

The county deployed Fortinet solutions—FortiGate NGFWs (four in the core and 40 in HA pairs at remote sites) managed via FortiManager VM, plus FortiEDR, FortiAnalyzer and FortiGuard MDR. The implementation delivered seamless integration with third‑party systems, centralized visibility and management, proactive threat detection, and 100% uptime, materially improving the county’s security posture and resilience while plans continue to expand the Fortinet footprint.
