Case Study: Buenos Aires City Government achieves 24/7 network availability and sub‑minute incident response at the Youth Olympic Games with Fortinet

A Fortinet Case Study

Preview of the Buenos Aires City Government Case Study

Securing High Network Availability and Performance at the Youth Olympic Games

The Government of the City of Buenos Aires’ IT Security team managed cybersecurity for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, a 12-day event with 4,012 athletes, 206 delegations and over 1 million spectators across 16 venues. They faced high-volume, multinational traffic and strict IOC SLAs while needing to guarantee real-time availability and integrity of competition data, plus content filtering and protection for underage athletes.

To meet these requirements they deployed 48 Fortinet FortiGate next‑generation firewalls (full bundle) across venues and central data centers, created a dedicated CSIRT and tested some 60 conflict scenarios, and integrated security into the interconnection service. The outcome was uninterrupted 24/7 network availability, sub‑minute incident response, effective web filtering, no cybersecurity incidents during the Games, and easier management of multiple networks while exceeding IOC requirements.
