Lexmark Cuts WAN Costs in Half While Shoring up Its Global Security

Lexmark, a Lexington, Kentucky–based provider of printers, services and enterprise solutions serving customers in 170+ countries, faced rising WAN costs and growing security concerns—ransomware, supply-chain risk and the need for centralized, transparent security across thousands of employees and global sites. The COVID‑era shift to remote work also exposed limitations of its MPLS‑centric WAN and urgent need for a more flexible, manageable infrastructure.

Lexmark replaced MPLS with a FortiGate-based hub-and-spoke ADVPN architecture (virtual FortiGates in regional clouds and physical FortiGates at sites), added load balancing, VLAN segmentation and FortiAnalyzer for visibility. The result: WAN connectivity costs were cut in half (saving hundreds of thousands annually), 85% of MPLS sites were migrated within a month, redundancy and security posture improved, and ongoing operational effort to maintain global security was greatly reduced.
