Large School District Achieves Automated, Highly Effective Ransomware Protection

A large Texas school district serving more than 20,000 students across 20+ campuses had a three-person IT team and struggled to secure endpoints—teacher Windows tablets and personal devices—that operated off-network. Two ransomware incidents that spread before detection forced full server restores and nearly a week of intensive remediation, and new state K–12 security mandates increased pressure to shore up protections.

The district ran a proof-of-concept and deployed Fortinet’s Security Fabric—led by FortiEDR alongside FortiGate, FortiMail, FortiSandbox, FortiAuthenticator, FortiManager, and FortiAnalyzer—which blocked tested ransomware and integrated with Active Directory. The solution automated detection and response at endpoints, stopped malicious behaviors before they propagated, cut remediation time and management overhead, and reduced the risk of downtime and reputational damage while freeing staff for other tasks.
