Case Study: City of Portland achieves DDoS protection and zero-trust network resilience with Fortinet

A Fortinet Case Study

Preview of the City of Portland Case Study

How Portland, Oregon, Secures Innovative Community Services

The City of Portland, through its Smart City PDX and Portland Urban Data Lake initiatives, needed to protect large open-data programs and sensitive municipal services while preserving transparency and privacy. Facing aging, end-of-life firewalls, DDoS risks, and a complex procurement environment, the city launched a two-year due-diligence process to find a next-generation firewall and partner that could meet technical, financial, and community-focused criteria.

Portland chose Fortinet after real-world benchmarking and rolled out FortiGate NGFWs along with FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, FortiClient, and FortiAuthenticator. The deployment improved DDoS response and threat protection, consolidated management and automation, reduced latency and manual configuration, and enabled identity-based controls as the city moves toward zero-trust — all with smooth migrations and minimal support tickets.
