Green Energy Provider Converges OT and IT Security through Platform Approach

Alperia, a South Tyrol energy provider formed in 2016 that runs 34 hydroelectric plants, district heating, a 9,200 km grid and 1,000 EV chargers for 370,000+ customers, needed to bring OT management in‑house to ensure safe, reliable, and continuous services across 200 Alpine sites. The challenge was to secure and segment a diverse ICS/SCADA and IoT estate, operate in harsh environments, simplify regulatory reporting, and reduce reliance on multiple external vendors.

Working with partner KONVERTO, Alperia deployed FortiGate Rugged NGFWs with FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer, using OT zoning, zero‑touch templates, a hybrid mesh firewall approach and Fortinet Security Fabric for IT/OT/cloud convergence. The rollout delivered stronger protocol-aware protection, centralized visibility and reporting, faster remote deployments without onsite specialists, reduced operating costs, improved resilience and compliance, and a platform for ongoing cloud services and advanced protections.
