Fortinet secures 3G communications provider’s mobile messaging services

Hutchison 3G Austria (H3G), a Vienna-based 3G operator serving about 773,000 subscribers, needed to protect its “3” unified mailbox (email, MMS, voice and video mail) while meeting strict SLAs (response <1s for 95% of calls). Its legacy anti-spam add-on was inefficient, offered no MMS protection, was no longer supported, and created back-end bottlenecks and malware risk (about three infected emails per second), so H3G required a scalable, low‑operation solution.

H3G selected Fortinet FortiMail to relay and filter inbound/outbound email and MMS, delivering multi-layered anti-spam/anti-virus/anti-spyware protection and appliance-based licensing for cost-effective scalability (targeting 50 emails/s and 24 MMS/s). After deployment the operator now manages two appliances (≈1 hour/week), reduced server footprint versus 10 Sun servers, achieved an anti-spam catch rate of ~99.91%, lowered email rejection from 90% to 40%, and improved MMS security, QoS and overall TCO.
